Im Anschluss an ihre Ausbildung zur Bauzeichnerin studierte Andrea Thelen an der FH Düsseldorf in der Fachrichtung Architektur. Ihre Abschlussarbeit absolvierte sie bei Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Meisenheimer und erhielt 1996 ihr Diplom. Anschließend wirkte sie bei Prof. Jürgen Pahl und Dr. Beate Niemann im Büro für Urbanistik in Düsseldorf.
Von 1998 bis 2006 war sie als Mitarbeiterin bei Schwitzke & Partner, architecture and design, in Düsseldorf tätig. Im Bereich Retail erwarb
sie umfassende Kompetenzen und betreute als Projektmanagerin hochwertige Marken wie Burberry und Tommy Hilfiger.
Unter ihrer Leitung entstanden Flagship-Stores in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Genf, Graz und Paris. Zu ihren Aufgabenschwerpunkten zählten vor allem die Entwicklung von Licht-, Farb- und Material-
konzeptionen.
Von 2006 bis 2021 führte Andrea Thelen als Gesellschafterin von thelenarchitekten das 1995 gegründete Architekturbüro gemeinsam
mit Ihrem Mann Hans-Jörg Thelen. Nach seinem sukzessiven Rückzug aus der aktiven Mitarbeit hat sie 2022 die alleinige Geschäftsführung der thelenarchitekten GbR übernommen, die dann am 31. Juli 2026 aufgelöst wurde. Andrea Thelen führt das Architekturbüro nun als Einzelunternehmerin unter dem Namen thelenarchitekten BDA weiter.
Andrea Thelen ist Mitglied im Verband der Frauen in der Immobilien-
wirtschaft e.V., im Rotonda Business Club, BVMW Mittelstand und im AIV Architekten und Ingenieure Verband Düsseldorf. Zudem war sie sechs Jahre lang ehrenamtliches Mitglied im Presbyterium der Ev. Kreuzkirche in Düsseldorf. In 2024 wurde Andrea Thelen in den Bund Deutscher Architekten (BDA) berufen.

After completing her training as a structural draftsperson, Andrea Thelen studied architecture at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (FH Düsseldorf). She completed her thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Meisenheimer and received her degree in 1996. Subsequently, she worked with Prof. Jürgen Pahl and Dr. Beate Niemann at the *Büro für Urbanistik* (Urban Planning Office) in Düsseldorf.
From 1998 to 2006, she worked for Schwitzke & Partner (architecture and design) in Düsseldorf. She gained extensive expertise in the retail sector and, acting as a project manager, oversaw projects for high-end brands such as Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger.
Under her leadership, flagship stores were created in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Geneva, Graz, and Paris. Her key responsibilities focused primarily on developing lighting, color, and material concepts.
From 2006 to 2021, Andrea Thelen managed the architectural firm *thelenarchitekten*—founded in 1995—as a partner alongside her husband, Hans-Jörg Thelen. Following his gradual withdrawal from active involvement, she assumed sole management of *thelenarchitekten GbR* in 2022; the partnership was subsequently dissolved on July 31, 2026. Andrea Thelen now continues to operate the architectural practice as a sole proprietorship under the name *thelenarchitekten BDA*.
Andrea Thelen is a member of the *Verband der Frauen in der Immobilienwirtschaft e.V.* (Association of Women in the Real Estate Industry), the Rotonda Business Club, the BVMW (German Association for Small and Medium-sized Businesses), and the AIV (Association of Architects and Engineers Düsseldorf). She also served for six years as a volunteer member of the presbytery of the Protestant Kreuzkirche in Düsseldorf. In 2024, Andrea Thelen was inducted into the *Bund Deutscher Architekten* (BDA—Association of German Architects).

1995 • Vom Ursprung
Hans-Jörg Thelen studierte Architektur an der Fachhochschule Düsseldorf und erhielt 1990 sein Diplom mit Auszeichnung. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Projektleiter namhafter Architekturbüros und im Anschluss an Arbeitsaufenthalte in Jakarta, Bangkok und Singapur gründete er 1995 das Architekturbüro „thelenarchitekten“ in Krefeld.
2002 • Ortswechsel
Was einst klein begann, war inzwischen zu einem vielseitigen Team gewachsen. Im Jahr 2002 wurden die Räumlichkeiten in Krefeld schlichtweg zu klein und ein neuer Standort musste her. thelenarchitekten zog in ein Loft in der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf.
2006 • Neue Köpfe
Einer der neuen Köpfe im Team war Andrea Thelen. Sie absolvierte 1996 ihr Studium an der FH Düsseldorf und erwarb bereits umfassende Kompetenzen als Projektmanagerin bei Schwitzke & Partner in Düsseldorf. Im Sommer gründeten Andrea und Hans-Jörg Thelen die thelenarchitekten GbR.
2016 • Berlin
Berlin wurde zum neuen Wirkungsfeld: Nach der Planung der Rathauspassagen folgten weitere Aufträge aus der Hauptstadt. Die thelenarchitekten GbR entschied sich daraufhin für einen zweiten Bürostandort in Berlin-Mitte.
2018 • Raumwechsel
Das Team wuchs weiter, das Loft wurde zu klein und thelenarchitekten zog erneut um, diesmal in die Rosenstraße in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort.
2021 • Weichenstellung
Hans-Jörg Thelen hatte sich entschieden, sich sukzessive aus der aktiven Mitarbeit zurückzuziehen. Anfang 2021 übernahm Andrea Thelen die alleinige Geschäftsführung der thelenarchitekten GbR. Damit endete auch die Zeit des Büros in Berlin.
2024 • Ein neuer Kurs
Andrea Thelen hatte das Büro inzwischen mit neuen Ideen und Innovationen weiterentwickelt, es inhaltlich sowie strukturell modernisiert und neue Impulse gesetzt. Im Oktober wurde sie in den BDA berufen.
2026 • Weiterbauen
Im Juli wurde die thelenarchitekten GbR aufgelöst. Andrea Thelen führt das Architekturbüro seitdem als Einzelunternehmerin unter dem Namen thelenarchitekten BDA am Standort in der Rosenstraße in Düsseldorf weiter.
1995 • Origins
Hans-Jörg Thelen studied architecture at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, graduating with distinction in 1990. After working as a project manager for renowned architectural firms and completing work stints in Jakarta, Bangkok, and Singapore, he founded the architectural practice „thelenarchitekten“ in Krefeld in 1995.
2002 • Relocation
What began on a small scale had grown into a versatile team. By 2002, the Krefeld premises had simply become too small, necessitating a new location. thelenarchitekten moved into a loft in Düsseldorf, the state capital.
2006 • New Faces
Andrea Thelen was one of the new additions to the team. She had graduated from the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1996 and gained extensive experience as a project manager at Schwitzke & Partner in Düsseldorf. That summer, Andrea and Hans-Jörg Thelen founded thelenarchitekten GbR.
2016 • Berlin
Berlin became a new area of activity: following the planning of the „Rathauspassagen,“ further commissions from the capital followed. Consequently, thelenarchitekten GbR decided to open a second office location in Berlin-Mitte.
2018 • Changing Spaces
As the team continued to grow, the loft became too small prompting another move for thelenarchitekten, this time to Rosenstraße in the Düsseldorf district of Pempelfort.
2021 • Setting a New Course
Hans-Jörg Thelen decided to gradually withdraw from active involvement in the firm. In early 2021, Andrea Thelen assumed sole management of thelenarchitekten GbR. This also marked the end of the firm’s presence in Berlin.
2024 • A New Direction
Andrea Thelen had by then further developed the firm with new ideas and innovations, modernizing it both in terms of its work and structure while introducing fresh impulses. In October, she was appointed to the BDA (Association of German Architects).
2026 • Continuing the Work
thelenarchitekten GbR was dissolved in July. Since then, Andrea Thelen has continued to run the architectural practice as a sole proprietor under the name thelenarchitekten BDA, operating from the office on Rosenstraße in Düsseldorf.
